What Is IPL?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a non-invasive light-based technology that delivers precisely controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light into the skin. Depending on the treatment, IPL targets melanin (pigment), haemoglobin (in blood vessels), or water within collagen — stimulating the skin’s natural repair processes, encouraging new cell growth, and boosting collagen production for improved tone and texture. Unlike laser, which uses a single wavelength, IPL uses a range of wavelengths, making it a versatile tool for addressing multiple skin concerns without any downtime.

IPL Skin Treatments – Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions will I need?

This varies from person to person, depending on your hair colour, skin tone, and the area being treated. Because hair grows in cycles, multiple treatments are needed to catch each follicle during its active growth phase. Your clinician will give you a personalised recommendation during your free consultation, but most clients see excellent results after a course of sessions.

Does IPL hair removal hurt?

IPL is considered quick and virtually painless. Most clients feel a gentle warmth or a very mild sensation during treatment. Because the handset does not contact the skin, there is no discomfort from pressure or friction. Many people find it far more comfortable than traditional hair removal methods such as waxing.

Is IPL hair removal permanent?

IPL provides permanent hair reduction — meaning it significantly reduces the amount and density of hair over time. It does not guarantee that every single hair will never return, but any regrowth is typically finer and much sparser. Periodic maintenance sessions may be recommended to maintain your results long term.

Who is suitable for IPL hair removal?

IPL works by targeting the melanin in the hair follicle, so it tends to be most effective on those with lighter skin tones and darker hair. It may be less effective on very light, blonde, grey, or red hair. Your suitability will be thoroughly assessed during your free consultation. If IPL is not the right option for you, our team will advise you honestly and suggest a more suitable alternative.

IPL Acne Treatment

For anyone struggling with inflammatory acne, persistent breakouts, or the scarring acne can leave behind, IPL acne treatment offers a clinically proven, virtually pain-free approach to clearer skin — with no antibiotics, no harsh topical chemicals, and no downtime.

How It Works

During IPL acne treatment, the device emits targeted pulses of yellow, green, and red light into the skin. These wavelengths work together on two levels. First, they destroy the bacteria responsible for inflammation, directly reducing active breakouts. Second, the red light component targets overactive sebaceous glands — the oil-producing glands that, when blocked, cause spots to form. By regulating sebum production, IPL not only clears existing acne but also helps prevent new breakouts from developing. In addition, the light energy stimulates collagen production, working to smooth the skin’s surface and improve the appearance of acne scarring over time.

A cooling cryo-handset is applied to the skin before treatment to maximise comfort. The IPL handset itself does not contact the skin, making the experience gentle and well-tolerated even for sensitive skin types.

Benefits of IPL Acne Treatment

  • Safe and effectively pain-free
  • No downtime — return to daily activities immediately
  • Dramatically reduces active inflammation and redness
  • Targets the root cause by preventing sebum overproduction
  • Stimulates collagen to improve the appearance of acne scarring
  • Evens out skin surface texture
  • Many clients notice a visible difference after just one treatment

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

A recommended course typically consists of 3 to 4 treatments, spaced 2 to 3 weeks apart. During your free initial consultation, our team will assess your skin and advise on the course of treatment best suited to your individual concerns. Maintenance treatments may be recommended for long-term management.

IPL Photorejuvenation

If your skin has been affected by sun damage, age spots, uneven pigmentation, fine lines, or the persistent facial redness associated with rosacea, IPL photorejuvenation is one of the most effective and established treatments available. Our IPL pigmentation treatment works with your skin’s own renewal process — stimulating it to repair, resurface, and reveal a more even, youthful complexion.

What Does It Treat?

  • Sun damage and solar lentigines (sun spots)
  • Age spots and general pigmentation
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Fine lines and early signs of wrinkles
  • Rosacea-related facial redness and flushing

How It Works

The light energy emitted during a photorejuvenation treatment is absorbed by the melanin in pigmented lesions and by the haemoglobin responsible for redness, triggering the body’s natural healing response. The skin is encouraged to produce new cells and increase collagen levels — plumping the skin from within, reducing the appearance of fine lines, and gradually fading discolouration. After treatment, pigmented areas may temporarily appear darker before naturally sloughing off over one to two weeks. This is a completely normal and expected part of the process, and a sign that the treatment is working.

There is no downtime. Following your appointment, we simply recommend keeping the skin protected with SPF 30 or higher and avoiding excessive sun exposure during your course.

What Causes Pigmentation?

Pigmentation has several common causes, and understanding yours can help determine the most appropriate treatment approach. Typical causes include:

  • Overexposure to UV radiation (sun damage accumulated over time)
  • Genetic predisposition to uneven skin tone
  • Hormonal changes, including those triggered by pregnancy or hormonal contraception
  • Certain chemicals found in perfumes, soaps, or shampoos

Your clinician will discuss the likely cause of your pigmentation during your consultation and ensure IPL photorejuvenation is the right course of action for you.

Recommended Course

Most clients benefit from a course of 3 to 6 treatments, spaced 2 to 3 weeks apart. The number of sessions required will depend on the depth and extent of pigmentation — your clinician will advise you following a thorough skin assessment.

IPL for Vascular Lesions

Thread veins, facial redness, and other visible vascular lesions are among the most common cosmetic skin concerns — and conditions that IPL treats particularly well. Our IPL vascular lesions treatment targets unwanted blood vessels directly, without any cuts, needles, or recovery time.

What Can It Treat?

  • Thread veins (facial and superficial)
  • Rosacea — including persistent redness and flushing
  • Cherry angiomas (small, bright-red growths on the skin)
  • Campbell de Morgan spots

How It Works

IPL for vascular lesions works by targeting haemoglobin — the protein in red blood cells that gives them their colour. The light energy is absorbed by the haemoglobin in the unwanted blood vessel, causing it to heat up, break down, and be naturally reabsorbed by the body. The surrounding skin remains unaffected. IPL is particularly effective for the diffuse facial redness and flushing associated with rosacea, where other treatments often fall short.

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

Many clients see meaningful results in as few as 2 to 3 treatments. The exact course required will depend on the extent of vascular involvement. Your clinician will advise you at your initial consultation.

Before and After Care

These guidelines apply across all three IPL treatments and are important for your safety and best possible results.

Pre-Treatment

  • Avoid sun exposure for 3 to 4 weeks before treatment
  • Tanned skin cannot be treated — this is a safety requirement. Any fake tan must be stopped at least one week before your appointment and thoroughly exfoliated off before arriving
  • Skin must be clean and free from deodorant, makeup, and moisturiser on the day of treatment
  • Please inform the clinic of any changes to medication before or on the day of your appointment

What to Expect After Treatment

  • Erythema (redness) and oedema (mild swelling) are normal immediately after treatment and may last from a couple of hours up to 2 to 3 days
  • The treated area may feel similar to mild sunburn for a few hours
  • Pigmented areas may appear temporarily darker — this will lighten and naturally shed over 1 to 2 weeks
  • Temporary bruising, crusting, itching, or changes in pigmentation can occasionally occur; these are usually short-lived

Post-Treatment Care

  • Makeup can be applied immediately after treatment, unless there is any epidermal blistering
  • Cool the skin with aloe vera gel or an ice pack if needed — avoid other skincare products on treated areas
  • Apply SPF 30 or higher daily throughout your course of treatment
  • For 24 hours after treatment, avoid sunbathing, sunbeds, hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, and vigorous exercise
